The Velvet Underground was an American band that formed in 1965 and performed through 1973. Lou Reed and John Cale are two of its best known members. While the band was never commerically successful, they developed a cult following and strongly influenced other musical groups. The Velvet Underground's genre as been described as avant-garde, experimental rock, art rock, and protopunk. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
